Teaching with picture books to students is quite interesting. They can not only learn to appreciate the beautiful English words and sentences in picture books but also may be inspired by the important and meaningful information and thoughts on the issue related to life education in picture books, provoking them to do more critical reading and re-thinking.

[Reflection]
Sometimes, I wonder why we have to teach English to students. Teaching English should not only be a job to teach students how to take English tests but also be a task to guide them to make more contact with cultures and cultivate their re-thinking skills or competence.

    Helping students to make good use of their voice is very great and important. Students can be inspired to dare to speak English and read stories dramatically. 
 
    I love this picture book, and so do my students. It's so cute. My students really got involved in the activity.

[Teaching steps]
1. Give students the pages of the picture book to ask them to sequence the pictures first.
2. The group leader should lead the other group members to read the story together to get the main gist of the picture book.
3. The teacher shows them the correct sequence of the picture book.
4. Students, 3 in one group, read the script of the story adapted to be the one in the form of Readers Theater.

The Crocodile
Went to the dentist
And sat down in the chair,
And the dentist said, "Now tell me, sir,
Why does it hurt and where?"
And the Crocodile said, "I'll tell you the truth,

And he opened his jaws so wide, so wide,
The the dentist, he climbed right inside,

To North or South or East or West...
He left no forwarding address.

[繪本與微電影]
這學期利用第一次段考後,讓孩子們看了一本繪本(真的要大力加上萬分感謝Leo Wu老師推薦那麼好玩的繪本及提供教學idea與流程的討論), 此繪本是三民書局出的The Brain大頭比利(內容介紹), 然後讓孩子們討論各組story map及劇本, 第二堂課讓孩子們上課retell the story,感覺孩子們練習時間不夠,後來讓孩子們討論優缺點後,再讓孩子們改拍成微電影,他們最後花了大概十天回家工作天的時間, 各組討論拍攝時間、地點、道具、場景等等,我呢~則要孩子們先選出各組導演,大概跟孩子們講解一下電影場景拍攝畫面安排及流程設計,最後再由各組拍出自己的繪本微電影、自己剪輯、加字幕, 把這故事重述一次, 最後交出影片檔,從孩子們的回饋中,他們都覺得很喜歡和同伴一起努力共事,我想這就是英語教學之外的意外收穫,能夠一起團隊合作,齊心協力,這就是我想要孩子們學習的精神呢~我真的覺得114的孩子們太優秀啦~Fortuna太愛你們啦~

Step 1 Discuss the keywords 

The students discussed the keywords(ex: names, places, verbs, nouns, or adjectives...) of the dialogues and wrote them down in the story circles.

The students wrote down the keywords of the dialogues after Teacher Fortuna's explanation, demonstration and guidance because this was the first time the students applied such story circles to think about the keywords. 





Step 2: Write the story in the dialogues.
Each group uses the keywords they write down in the first section to describe the story in the two dialogues. Each group expresses the story in different ways.








Step 3 Add-on Stories
   The whole class was divided into Team A and Team B. One of Team A or Team B was chosen by the teacher to write down their teams' stories by writing down one sentence once. After the two teams finished their stories, the teacher checked the appropriateness of the story elements in the dialogues as well as the accuracy of the language use to decide the winner. Because Team B made fewer mistakes than Team A, Team B was the winner, who got a pack of cookies.









Reflection

    Leaving students more space and time to think can develop their thinking skills as well as language skills. I think it would be better that only the teacher keeps talking in class all the time.

Bear feels sick 
繪本融入翰林英語B3U6課後閱讀, 搭配此課生病的相關繪本, 網路上也有相關活動介紹, 已把學習單做好上傳, 需要可以下載運用喔!

In Hanlin English B3 U6, the topic is related to being sick. After I finished teaching this whole unit, I let my students read the picture book Bear Feels Sick. The following is the teaching procedures, vidoes, and the worksheet. 

Teaching procedures:

1. Wathc the video of Bear feels sick.  
    先讓學生觀看此影片兩次

    Video version 2     
2. Ask student to read the picture books by applying Jigsaw.
    然後把此故事分成四部份讓學生用分組合作學習拼圖法來共同閱讀此故事
3. Ask the expert group to discuss with the other experts.
   請專家組先與其他組專家5分鐘討論負責的部分
   

   

   

4. The experts come back to their home group to share their discussion with their group.
   專家組員再回到原組別與組員分享(老師的限時空時很重要!)
    

5. Finish the worksheet of Bear feels sick
    完成學習單, 有的可以請同學回家完成, 有的帶著他們討論! 看老師們的時間與需求!

803&805 教室內的美麗風景,他們討論的表情,超美! 很愛他們認真討論的樣子!!!

7. 教學後記
    讓學生上完段考範圍後, 來做個繪本長篇閱讀, 透過分組討論, 行動載具結合聽力練習, 我發現803和805的孩子漸漸對於分組合作學習與小組討論掌握到了要領, 也透過上網找地的教學資源, 讓學生做閱讀的訓練, 我想能在這樣的教室裡看到孩子們認真討論的樣子, 這也就很值得了!

今天帶810孩子閱讀完優百科Reading Wise 1(書籍介紹)的Unit 6故事後, 做了Picture Story故事排序後, 請孩子依據這四個圖提供的單字及片語, 小組或兩人一組討論出故事摘要, 經由老師批改後, 再用載具中的Seesaw應用程式中拍照功能, 將該頁拍照後, 使用其中的麥克風錄音功能, 請孩子們小組或師徒一組將故事摘要唸出來,然後將此故事摘要及口說檔上傳至Seesaw! 這樣花了我大概30分鐘的時間讓孩子們討論這四張圖然後完成摘要寫作及口說檔上傳!

英語繪本教學教材及教學活動

我整理了一下這幾年(2015~2018)因為帶自己小孩念繪本後,開始在國中英語課堂教學中,加入英語繪本元素,我整理了一下,希望對於也想要在學校推廣繪本教學的老師能有些幫助。

當然更加希望學校或是公立圖書館都能夠充實這樣英語繪本資源,除了紙本繪本外,cd也是對於英語聽力很重要的喔!

將英語繪本融入自己的教學,不管是搜尋資源或是課程設計,都花了自己不少時間,寫在部落格,一方面怕自己忘記,二方面做記錄,最重要的是,覺得每次孩子們在我在英語課加入繪本,他們聽故事的眼神表情及討論的認真,是讓我感動的。

我把我這幾年的教學記錄宇收集的教材,都加入了繪本標籤,整理如下的文章,有些學習單的活動是自己想的,有的活動則是網路搜尋來,再重新設計編排,有的就直接用,純屬教學性質,非營利!分享,也純粹希望有更多老師加入繪本教學,因為真的可以讓英語學習很不一樣!而我所用的學習單教學活動,有的是自己設計,有的是參考國外網站,純屬教育的目的,希望我的學生能夠有多元英語教學媒材的接觸喔!如果有版權問題,請來信(fortunalu1013@gmail.com)告知,便會移除!
